The Beauty Products Jenni Kayne Uses to the Last Drop

“I’m all about embracing effortlessness, which I think is very in sync with California living,” says Jenni Kayne. This makes sense, as everything Kayne touches seems to have a calming feel to it, be it her ultrachic decor brand, Jenni Kayne Home, or her clean skin-care and wellness brand, Oak Essentials.

Kayne has always known she wanted to be a designer. She attended Otis College of Art and Design to get her start before “jumping in headfirst” to create her company, she says: “It definitely wasn’t easy, and I’ve learned so much along the way.”

And one of the many lessons that come with being an entrepreneur is knowing when to take breaks. For Kayne, focusing on meditation and gua sha is a nightly ritual. “Taking time to care for yourself is so valuable, because to be the best version of yourself, you have to prioritize yourself,” she says. “I think self-care is so powerful because it allows you to feel present and really show up in ways that are meaningful.”

Here, Kayne’s A.M. routine:

6:30: When I wake up, I’ll check my phone, and then I won’t look at it until I’ve finished my morning routine, which I feel really helps me start my day off on the right foot.

6:45: I’ll make yerba mate tea or an iced matcha latte with almond milk. After I have that, I’ll try to meditate and squeeze in skin care before my kids start getting ready for school.

7:03: I really keep it simple most days, especially because I’m usually off to do some form of exercise in the morning. I ride horses before dropping my kids off at school, and then I do Pilates and Gyrotonic two times a week in the afternoon. Before I ride, I’ll wash my face with our Cleansing Balm or Pure Gel Cleanser and follow that up with the Oak Vitamin C SerumRitual Oil, and Moisture Rich Balm to really lock in hydration. I never leave the house without SPF. Beautycounter’s Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer is a favorite of mine that I’ve used for years.

8:43: Once I’m home and drop-offs are done, I’ll shower quickly before heading to the office. I’ll dry brush if I have time, but I always use the Oak Essentials Dew Body Oil after showering for an instant dose of moisture. It’s so hydrating and feels super-luxurious. I try to only wash my hair once or twice a week using Crown Affair’s shampoo and conditioner, but I use its oil daily.

Kayne’s P.M. routine:

7:00: My husband and I always prioritize having dinner as a family with our three kids. Our lives can get so crazy, and it’s nice for us to come together and catch up on all the moments that filled our days.
8:30: I love taking our dogs for a walk around the neighborhood or letting them run in our yard after dinner. It’s a nice way to connect with nature before getting the family ready for bed.

9:30: Once my kids are asleep, I’ll start my evening routine. I always start with the Cleansing Balm from Oak Essentials. This balm is such a great way to start winding down. Once I’ve cleansed my face, I use the Oak Essentials Balancing Mist. I learned years ago that your skin should be damp before applying other products, so this mist is a must in my routine — plus the scent is so relaxing. Next up are my serums (I love our Nightly Retinol Serum), plus the Ritual Oil and Moisture Rich Balm.

9:40: While my products sink in, I go make myself a cup of tea. Once my tea is ready, it’s back to the bathroom to finish off my skin-care routine. One of my favorite skin-care tools is a gua sha stone. I’ll spend a few minutes on each side of my face to help with lymphatic drainage and to release tension. To make sure I’m relaxed and ready for bed, I like to use my Chi Palm. It aids in circulation and helps reduce inflammation, which is something I definitely need after a long day.

On the beauty industry:

I’m really proud of the beauty industry embracing clean ingredients. When I started getting into clean beauty 16 years ago, clean products were essentially nonexistent and now they’re everywhere. Something I hope will change: testing on animals.

.

On finding confidence:

It may feel obvious, but the older I get, the more confident I become. As the years go on, I’ve really been able to become more grounded and in touch with what makes me feel good, and that’s translated to this idea of aging gracefully.

.

On deciding what beauty products are worth trying:

I always do my research! I’m really discerning, because I love my routine and I think less is more, but if my friends make something that I trust, I’ll give it a shot.

.

On the beauty services she swears by:

I get microcurrent facials from my favorite aesthetician and medical facials from my dermatologist to keep my skin clean and clear. I also love Ricari treatments, regular acupuncture and massages, and daily movement.
